The new Department of Fisheries and Land Resources unites all aspects of support provided to renewable resource industries, and better positions the Provincial Government to support economic development and growth in these areas. The following have been realigned within the former Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods to create the new department.

February 22, 2017 Government Structure Realigned

The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources aligns the province's natural renewable resources of fisheries, aquaculture, forestry, agriculture and agrifoods. The department is responsible for supporting the advancement and development of the province's fishing, aquaculture, forestry and agriculture industries. The Provincial Government works with industry and stakeholders to achieve sustainable economic growth in all sectors for the benefit of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The mandate of the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources includes:  

  • Development and growth of renewable resource areas for fisheries, aquaculture, inland fish and wildlife, agriculture, and forestry for optimum sustainable economic benefit to the Province as well as its ecological integrity.
  • Conservation and protection of natural areas, wildlife, and wildlife habitat, including wilderness and ecological reserves. 
  • Administration of crown lands as a social and economic resource for the province.
  • Regulation of, and compliance and enforcement activities for animal welfare, aquaculture, agriculture, fish processing, inland fish and wildlife, and forestry.
